Drug abuse is one of the major contributors to worldwide mortality and morbidity rates as the abuse of different types of drugs has increased considerably in the recent times and stands out as a major health problem throughout the world. Drugs prepared from Cannabis sativa are the premiere examples of such highly addictive drugs. The present retrospective study was done with the objective of compiling data of Cannabis sativa seizures under NDPS Act that were reported by NDPS division of State Forensic Science Laboratory, Himachal Pradesh, Shimla Hills, Junga, India during January 2016 to December 2021. Himachal Pradesh (located in northern part of India) has a wide diversity of Flora and Fauna. In this wide diversity of flora, Cannabis sativa is a widely growing weed and being exploited for the world famous Malana Cream: a high quality product of Marijuana. The plant and its preparations are used as a drug of abuse since ancient times. Due to its easy availability, the abuse and trafficking cases are increasing day by day. Data on locality was recorded and analyzed. As per the results of this study, Charas (Hashish) is the most common preparation of Cannabis sativa, abused at a large scale throughout the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is envisioned that this data analysis report will provide appropriate information for the academicians, researchers and law enforcement agencies to plan future research and effective preventive strategies to deal with upsurge in drug abuse and trafficking cases.
• This data provides information about the number of cases related to Cannabis abuse and trafficking of the drug received in the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL), Junga, Himachal Pradesh, India.
• This data can be used to understand the trends and extent of Cannabis abuse and its trafficking in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India.
• The state police, scientists and other government offices can be largely benefitted from this data in terms of controlling the abuse and trafficking of the drug in the state as well as nearby states.
• Further expansion of the dataset for the whole country can help countering the problem of Cannabis abuse and trafficking in the India.
