Role of Physiotherapy and Palliative Care in Forensic Psychiatry: A Descriptive Study

In the field of forensic psychology, a subspecialty of psychology, clinical and scientific knowledge are used to address legal challenges in scenarios involving civil, criminal, penal, or legislative issues. Psychotropic medications side effects frequently include significant weight gain, which has a negative impact on the health, happiness, efficiency, and quality of life forensic mental health patients. As a stand-alone or adjunct therapy for a variety of mental diseases, exercise and physical activity are now well recognized and widely used. A successful intervention may rely heavily on the staff at inpatient care facilities. In both school-age children and the broader population, exercise increase cognitive abilities including memory and concentration. Stress, anxiety, and depression can all be treated with exercise. Symptom reduction and cognitive improvement in schizophrenia patients, as well as potential reductions in drug cravings in substance use disorders, are other therapeutic effects of exercise that are significant to both general and forensic psychiatry. The literature was systematically reviewed to address the role of physiotherapy and palliative care in forensic psychiatry. Electronic databases PubMed and Web of Knowledge were searched for relevant studies. The findings show that patients receiving forensic mental health treatment are in extremely poor physical condition, which justifies physiotherapeutic interventions adapted to the specific demands of forensic mental health treatment. People with mental illnesses who are in safe care must have access to palliative care services that are tailored to their needs if unrestricted access to palliative care is a human right. The inevitable death of a patient in their care requires forensic mental health professionals to be proactive in their planning.
