Abstract

It is well known that forensic identification of a person can be accomplished using a person’s finger, tongue, lips, and dental data. But in addition to this, the palatal rugae patterns can be employed as an extra approach for identifying a specific person. Palatal rugae patterns can be analyzed and categorized using palatal rugoscopy. These patterns can be examined based on an individual’s palatal size, shape, and abundance. When it is difficult to identify a person using fingerprints or dental records, these patterns prove to be of great assistance. Rugae are the anatomical folds or wrinkles that develop in the palatal region of our oral cavity. It is specific to an individual and remains consistent over their lives. These patterns are seen to have a minor alteration following any kind of orthodontic treatment. However, it has been discovered that these minuscule deviations eventually return to their original pattern. The patterns can potentially be used as a biometric identification approach. It is known that the examinations of these patterns were performed on a dental cast, and the patterns were manually labeled with a pencil or black marker. Numerous studies have concentrated on the rugae pattern that is common throughout various populations. However, there is no specialized study designed to assess the prevailing rugae pattern, palatal arch morphology, and gender variation among the Indian and Negroid populations. The significance of palatal rugae in various geographic and ethnic contexts has been highlighted by this review.
