Abstract

Individuals are identified by face, facial features and body marks traditionally, but there are lacunae of this especially in situations where there are attempts to hide the identity. Wearing of facemask, and face covers conceals the facial identity invariably. Biometric data is now increasing available and is confirmatory for the purpose of identification of individuals. Such biometric data involve cardiac data-ECG, ocular data-iris, finger prints or gait parameters. Gait parameters are evolving for this aspect.

Data bases PUBMED, Google Scholar, and Scopus were searched with keywords – gait Signature, gait signature database, walking identification, and gait pattern recognition. The available papers were checked for study design as per the focused research question.

Facial identity is no longer an effective tool for tracking individuals. Gait signature are useful as a novel tool for this. Running is found as a more potent signature for individual identification. Generally, these individualistic walking patterns are called as gait signatures. Gait signature also allows identification from video recording, and from a distance.

Individualistic gait parameters are unique patterns distributed in three dimensional spatial, temporal and kinetic patterns. They are useful and reliable for identification of individuals in public areas from a distance.
