Abstract

The analysis of arson evidence might give some very crucial information to a forensic Investigation, whenever it is suspected that the fire has been set intentionally using some ignitable liquids. Even though the analysis of evidence in a forensic laboratory is mainly conducted by some experienced and well-established methodologies, for several years authors have proposed noteworthy improvements to those methods, giving some new and interesting approaches. This review outlines the most recent and suitable tools for the interpretation and analysis of arson debris evidence. This study about analytical tools mainly covers the works published from then 2001 to 2021 period. It includes the sources of consensus classified reference samples, standard protocols being followed now, new methodologies proposed for analysis and extraction of the samples, and the most novel statistical tools. Additionally, this review provides some relevant knowledge about the distortion effects of the ignitable liquids fingerprints, which are important to be considered for the interpretation of the results.
