A study of incidence of suicide during different phases of menstrual cycle

Suicide though comparatively a rare event, the study of suicide in the general population provides some guidelines to understand its occurrence in other populations. There is consistently demonstrated associations between mental disorder and suicide, the nature of which may be indirect than casual. In the females unlike the males, the hormones concentration in the body will be fluctuating during different phases of menstrual cycle. During the premenstrual phase, the female will have tension, irritability, depression and tendency to commit suicide for trivial reasons and we named this as “premenstrual syndrome”.

In this study an attempt has been made to know the incidence of suicide during different phases of menstrual cycle by taking 100 known suicide cases of reproductive age group women. The uterus were collected processed histopathologically arid the phase of endometrial growth was recorded histologically. Associated mental and physical factors were also considered as trigger points to suicide in this study. Depending upon the stage of endometrial growth, they were grouped into Early and Late Proliferative, Ovulatory, Early and late secretory and Pregnant phases. The result were in favour of high incidence of suicide during premenstrual and preovulatory periods.
