Determination of time since death from vitreous potassium concentration in subjects of Chandigarh zone of North-west India

Abstract

Flame photometry estimation of potassium concentration in vitreous humor aspirated from 1026 subjects died because of medicolegal causes revealed that a highly significant double logarithmic relationship between the log time since death and log vitreous potassium concentration during the first 66 hours of death. Though time since death could be predicted from the alteration in postmortem vitreous potassium concentration with SE error of log 0.1903 hours but factors like age, gender, cause of deaths and environmental temperature modulate it significantly.
