In this investigation twenty different solvent systems and two spraying reagents have been attempted for the separation and identification of three commonly used anaesthetic agents (two local - Lignocaine and Bupivacaine and one general - Propofol) by thin Layer Chromatography. Solvent system benzene - Ethanol (95:5) and Dragendorffs reagent as the visualizing agent has been found to be the most suitable combination for the local anaesthetic agents while Petroleum ether with Iodine fuming as a visualizing aid for the general anaesthetics. It is observed from this investigation that the same combination of solvent system and developing aid can not be used for the separation and identification of the two types of anaesthetics i. e. Local and General type.
