Fluoride toxicity in drinking water sources of Beri block, distt. Jhajjar, Haryana

Abstract

Fluoride concentration and other water quality parameters in ground water samples from 33 villages in Beri block of distt. Jhajjar, Haryana were assessed. A total of 97 drinking water sources (54 hand pumps, 30 open wells, 9 Tube wells and 4 supply water) were examined. The maximum fluoride concentration recorded war 3.05 mg/L in this area. Of these 36 samples (37%) showed the presence of fluoride in the range of 0.05 to 1.0 mg/L, 31 (32%) in the range of 1.1 to 1.5 mg/L, 29(30%) in the range of 1.5 to 3.0 mg/L, and 1(1%) in the range of 3.0 to 4.0 mg/L. In fluoride containing water alkalinity range from 376.5 to 2811.06 mg/L, Chloride range from 14.17 to 1943.24 mg/L, Calcium range from 38.07 to 306.1 mg/L, Magnesium range from 24.64 to 186.12 mg/L, total hardness range from 269.99 to 1040 mg/L, electrical conductiviry range from 1.03 to 11.39 mmho/cm and pH varied between 7.33 to 8.85. A systematic calculation of the correlation coefficients has also been carried out between different physico-chemical parameters.
