A Study to Assess the Effectiveness of Play Therapy on Anxiety among Hospitalized Children (6–12 Years), at Selected Hospital Rajkot

Abstract

A study to assess the effectiveness of play therapy on anxiety among hospitalized childrens of selected Pediatric hospital at Rajkot District was conducted in partial fulfilment as a requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Nursing, Saurashtra University.

(1). To assess the anxiety level before and after the intervention of play therapy among hospitalized children at selected hospital (2). To assess the effectiveness of play therapy on level of anxiety among hospitalized children (6–12 years) at selected hospital. (3). To determine the association with post-test anxiety level among hospitalized children with their selected demographic variables. It included the pre-experimental research approach, one group pre-test post-test research design, variables under study were hospitalized children as Independent variable; play therapy given during hospitalization as Dependent variable, Research is based on J. W. Kenny's open system model. Amruta Pediatric hospital as research setting, total 40 samples, Non-probability convenient sampling techniques was used. The instrument used for generating necessary data was checklist and Pediatric Anxiety Scale. The data obtained were analyzed and interpreted in the light of objectives and hypothesis using both descriptive and inferential statistical in terms of mean, Standard Deviation, ‘t’ test and chi-square. The mean Post-test effect score 7 is less than mean Pre-test effect score 29 with the mean difference of 22. That is statistically proved which depicts that play therapy on hospitalized anxiety is effective in terms of effect among the samples. More over as, the calculated‘t’ (13.66) is greater than the tabulated‘t’ (381.55) on hospitalized anxiety. Among the selected demographic variables the following were having significant association Age, Gender and Previous exposure of hospitalization.
