Indian higher education is experiencing tremendous changes. A high level of package of salary is baffling even corporate employees. Large number of universities which are mushrooming are mindboggling. Privatisation of education is forcing middle class parents to cough up huge sum of money for the education of their children. But, do all these lead to quality improvement? This paper addresses this question. The paper argues that at the core of the question of quality, there are important riddles to be solved. These riddles of political interference and academic indifference are examined in this paper.
