The likely presence of organochlorine and organophosphate pesticide residues on eighty agricultural soil samples in Mysore district has been surveyed by Gas Chromatography (GC) method consisting of electron capture detector (ECD) to analyze for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and flame photometric detector (FPD) for analysis of organophosphorous pesticides (OPPs). Pesticide residues were detected in 93% of the soil samples and included aldrin, a-HCH, b-HCH, g-HCH, dieldrin, endrin, hepachlor, endosulfan I, p,p2 -DDT, p,p2 -DDE, p,p2 -DDD, o,p-DDT). The highest and lowest mean concentration values of pesticide residues were found in Mysore and periyapatna taluks respectively. The most common pesticides were p,p2 -DDE and endosulfan I. Organophosphorous and atrazine pesticide residues were not found in any of the samples. Almost all of the sample’s pesticide residues content, Physico-Chemical characteristics and heavy metals properties were well within the permissible limits. No significant correlations were found among the averages of pesticide residues, Physico-Chemical characteristics and heavy metal concentrations of the soil samples.
