My objective for doing this research is to study the name of the Caspian Sea and the process through which this name has changed throughout history. Considering its strategic importance, fossil and food resources, Caspian Sea is one the most important regions of the world. Caspian is located in the heartland region. This big lake which is known as the sea considering its big size is ruled by different powers in the course of history and has had many different names. These names are taken from the settlers living around that sea or the regions alongside it. The most important country which has had the longer rule over this sea is Iran. Most of the names given to this sea in the course of history are Iranian names. The most important of such names is Caspian, which is the international name of the sea as well. Caspian is actually the name of a region in Iran. This sea is known as Mazandaran in Iran. Considering some of the mistakes committed by historians in recording the sea in history, the name of the sea was unfortunately known as Khazar in the history books for centuries. Later, this mistake was corrected. This article tries to prove the name of Caspian and Mazandaran with reference to historical books and resources.
