Abstract

This paper intends to analyze the paradoxes of conceptions, measurements and causes of urban poverty with particularly emphasis on Bangladesh context. This analysis is done based on the secondary sources of data. Basically, analyzing urban poverty is not an easy and simple task rather questionable. There are far-reaching debates on the conceptualizing urban poverty all over the world. The large majority of developing nations uses the cost of basic needs method in estimating income or expenditure based poverty. Bangladesh is not an exception. It is indeed evident that the trends and the percentage of urban poverty in Bangladesh declines with the rise in economic growth. In spite of the fact that, the number of population living below the poverty line has increased in urban areas as well. Additionally, urban poverty in Bangladesh is a result of rural-urban migration of the poor, unplanned urbanization, inflation, unemployment, inadequate access to assets, inadequate government policies, and governance failures.
