The female literacy rate in India has always been a matter of concern but many NGO initiatives and government ads, campaigns and programs are being held to spread awareness amongst people about the importance of literacy. Also the government has made strict rules for female equality rights. India literacy rate has shown significant rise in the past 10 years. However, census of India report clearly shows that female literacy is lower than the male literacy rate. Against this background the present study discusses some important perspectives on the female literacy rate existing in India and Karnataka. The paper is designed with the following objectives. 1. To discuss the present status of female literacy rate in India and Karnataka; 2. To discuss the hurdles of female literacy; 3. To suggest suitable policy measures to improve female literacy. The proposed study mainly is descriptive in nature. It solemnly based on secondary sources of data and information which is collected from the related sources as per need of the research. Literacy for girls is a crucial input for developing/preserving human resource development, which in the ultimate analysis is a national asset. Hence, it can be concluded that that Female literacy is a Social responsibility for each and every person in the society.
