Field experiment was conducted to study the efficacy of different herbicides on weed control and yield of onion (Allium cepa L. variety Hissar-2) at the Vegetable Research Farm, H. A. U., Hissar during 1973–74 and 1974–75. Fifteen treatments comprising of various concentrations of nitrofen (2, 4-dichlorophenyl, p-nitrophenyl ether), propanil (3’, 4’-dichloropropionanilide), dichlormate (3, 4-dichlorobenzymethyl carbamate), chloroxuron (3-(p-Chlorophenoxy) phenyl)-1, 1-dimethyl urea) and Prometryne (2, 4-bis (isopropylamino)-6-(methyl thio)-s-triazine) along with repealed weeding and weedy check were included in the experiment. Chenopodium album L. was controlled by all herbicides whereas none of the herbicides were able to control Cyperus rotundus L. effectively. Nitroftn at 2 kg/ha proved to be the best herbicide in controlling the weeds and increasing the yield of onion bulbs which was followed by 3 kg nitrofen and repeated weeding.
