Weed Control in Direct Seeded and Transplanted Rice1

Abstract

Weed control studies in direct seeded and transplanted rice were carried out in kharif 1972 and 1973. Weed competition was found very severe in direct seeded crop. Hand weeding treatments (hand weeding alone and hand weeding -f- 3% urea) gave most effective weed control followed by propanil (3’, 4’-dichloropropionalide) at 2.0 kg/ha. These three treatments were equally most effective in increasing plant productivity and grain production. A low dose of MCPB 4-[(4-chloro-o-tolyl) oxy] butyric acid) (0,5 kg/ha) combined with 3% urea proved as effective as its higher dose (1,0 kg/ha). There was no weed growth in transplanted crop because of the puddling operation on account of which neither weed growth nor crop response was influenced by the treatments
