Abstract

Field study to see the possibility of chemical weed control in upland paddy was conducted at the Central Soil and Water Conservation Research & Training Institute's farm, Selakui (Dehra Dun) in 1975 and 1976, It was found that weeds could be effectively controlled in upland paddy with the application of butachlor (A-(butoxy-methyl)-2-chlore-2’, 6’-diethylacetanilide) @ 2 kg/ha + one hand weeding obtaining yield of 31.55 q/ha and propanil (3’, 4’-dichloropropionalide) @ 1.4 lit./ha + one hand weeding yielding 28.52 q/ha as compared to control (10.41 q/ha). Net returns obtained with the use of chemicals were comparable with hand weeding. The study has helped in removing a major constraint in direct sown upland paddy
