Abstract

The experiment was conducted for two years on sandy loam soil during 1973–75 at Jhansi. Pre-planting trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2, 6-dinitro-N, N-di-propyl-p-toludine), nitralin (2,6-dinitro-4-methylsulphonyl-N,N-dipropyl aniline) and pre-emergence alachlor (2-chloro-2’,6’-diethyl-N-methoxymethyl acetanilide) were investigated in relation to 20 and 40 kg N/ha in a split plot design with 3 replications in green gram. Pre-emergence alachlor@2 kg/ha appeared promising for effective control of associated annual weeds which consequently raised dry matter production (vegetative yield) of green gram consistently over control. This treatment proved at par with pre-planting trifluralin and nitralin, each at 1 kg/ha. Nitrogen application @ 40 kg showed higher yield than 20 kg/ha. Manual weeding was not found as effective as the promising chemical treatments. These treatments did not show adverse residual effect on the succeeding crop of oat (rabi) in dry matter production.
