Field experiment were conducted during 1973 to 1975 at the Jute Agricultural Research Institute (JAR I), Farm Barrackpore, to evalute the efficiency of different herbicidal treatments to control weeds in jute fields and their effects on crop growth and fibre yields. During the ‘rabi’ season of 1974–75 bioassey studies were made to assess the residual effects of the treatments on weeds and crops after jute.
The data revealed that tetrapion (Sodium 2, 2, 3,3-tetrafiuoropropionate) at 3kg./ha as preplant application largely suppressed grassy weeds and also controlled nutsedse by 30–40%. Ansar 529 or Daconate (MSMA, monosodium mathane arsonate) at 4.5 kg/ha also gave good control of weeds when apptied as directed application in three weeks old jute. Dalapon (2,2-dichloropropionic acid) alone at 6kg/ha or in combination with MSMA at half the rates as directed application gave good suppression of weeds. Wheat or oat grown in the ‘rabi’ season of 1974–75, showed no phytotoxicity of the herbicides on the germination, stand or final grain or fodder yield of these crops.
