Residues of paraquat (l-r-dimethyl-4-4’-bipyridiaium ion (dichloride salt) aud diquat [6, 7-dihydroi-dipyrida [1, 2-a: 2’,1’c] pyrazinadium ion] were determined in paddy, rice, bran, husk and straw following preharvest foliar application for early ripening and harvest. Effect of parboiling was also studied on the dissipation of residues. The rate of application of paraquat was 0.5 and 0.625 kg/ha in 1978 and 0.2 and 0.3 kg/ha in 1979 Diquat was applied at 0.5 kg/ha. Residues of both paraquat and diquat in paddy as well rice. were below the tolerance limit presciibed for these compounds. Therefore, these schedules can be considered safe. In general, parboiling reduced the residues in all cases.
