Detailed studies on weed flora in the sub-humid lateritic belt of West Bengal, India were made over a period of five years (1978–83) on the life cycle, mode of propagation, nature of stem, leaf structure and distributing of the most common weed species numbering 223 belonging to 66 families in this region with special emphasis on crop land weeds of 109 species which comp-rise 49% of the total weed population. Amongst them, a larger number consisting of 40 weed species were found from family Poaceae (Gramineae), which is followed by 18 species from Asteraceae (Compositae), 17 species from Papilionaceae and 15 species from Cyperaceae.
