Results of two experiments conducted during Summer 1980 and 1981 under puddle-seeded conditions at Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttack indicated that in such typical agro-eco-system of rice culture, 97 to 100% of the weeds are sedges. The weed flora was composed of three major weeds viz., Fimbristylis miliacea Vahl, Cyperus difformis L. and Scirpus supinus L. and they caused an yield loss of about 24 to 32%. The granular herbicides applied either alone or as tank mixes or premixes such as butachlor+2, 4-D IPE, (0.75+0.5 kg/ha), pretilachlor (0.5 kg/ha), molinate/simetryn/MCPB (1.8/1.0/0.1 kg/ha) and naproamilide/thiobencarb (1.0/0.7 kg/ha) were found to bee/par with weed-free check and the recommended use of butachlor at 15 kg/ha. Further, the rate of application of granular herbicides viz., butachlor, thiobencarb, piperophos/dimethametryn premix can be reduced to as low as Q.6 kg/ha while the rate of application for 2, 4-D EE can be reduced to 0.4 kg/ha.
