Abstract

Seedlings of Solarium xanthocarpum Schrad: & Wendl. were sprayed with 25, 50, 75, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1000, 1200, 1400, 1600 ppm 2, 4-D at pre-flowering stage and with 1, 2, 5, 10,15, 20, 25, 50, 75, 100, 200.400, 600, 800,1000 ppm 2,4-D at post-flowering stage. 2, 4-D induced anatomical abnormalities in the root, stem and leaves. In root cortex metazylem and protoxylem elements were deformed. In stem, development of fan-shaped protrumbarances from the cells of phloem of primary and secondary vascular bundles were noted. The cells of cortex and the pith showed disintegration at higher concentrations of 2, 4-D. The mesophyll tissue was very much affected. Many cells of the tissue either became deformed or destroyed. The lethal dose was found to be 1400 ppm. 2, 4-D.
