Twelve herbicides were tested on sandy loam soils as preplant incorporated treat-ments to soil or postemergence spraying on four-to-five week old nutsedge to control this sedge during the years 1971–72 and 1972–73. The preplant applications were made 20 days before sowing of jute crop, while in some treatments it was repeated 10 days later. Dalapon was replaced with tetrapion in 1972. The nutsedge shoots and number of grasses were counted periodically before sowing of jute, after jute harvest in the fallow land and also in the succeeding crop of wheat.
2,4-D considerably reduced the nutsedge population but they were ineffective against grasses. Paraquat temporarily suppressed the nutsedge and grasses and did not improve the final yield. Dalapon was also ineffective against nutsedge but reduced grass weed population. MSMA, DSMA and tetrapion considerably reduced nutsedge and improved fibre yield. Other herbicides pebulate, EPTC and moliuate gave moderate to satisfactory control of nutsedge.
