Two years field studies executed at the J. N. Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya Research Farm, Mandsaur to determine the effect of chemical and cultural weed free media on the growth and yield of black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper G. V. T-9) revealed distinct advantages of using herbicides. Outstanding performance of pendimethalin (N-(l-ethylpropyl)-3, 4-dimethyl-2,(5-dinitrobenzenamine) 1.0 kg a. i./ha followed by terbutryn (2-(tert-butyl-p-tolyl methylcarbamate) 0.5 kg a.i./ha, permitting only neglible weed’ growth and producing almost double the grain yield. Kventhough, herbicides in general imposed a knock down effect on some weeds and broadly offerd a superior weed’ free media-at the formative stage; hand weeding as well as improvised methods, nevertheless, subjugated about 87 and 72 per cent weeds and enhanced the urid bean yields by 157 and 130 per cent, respectively. Traditional method failed to provide desirable weed control as interculture with Kolpa tended to encourage weed proliferation. Every quintal of weed dry matter produced under Mandsaur conditions inflicted adeclinement of 130 g of black gram production.
