Abstract

Weed problem in sorghum, maize and groundnut is alarmisg while it is less in rice, wheat and castor crops. Few special types like aquatic weeds(Marsilea spp., Typha spp., etc) and weeds (Parasitic) (Striga spp., on sorghum andCuseuta spp. on Lucerne) were also observed to a considerable extent, Narrow leaved weeds infest cereal crops more seriously than non-cereal crcps studied.

Distribution of weeds is extensive in garden and dry land situation and limited in wet land conditions. Monocot weed species are predominant over dicots in wet land conditions and reverse is the case in garden and dry land situations.

Poaceae and Cyperaceae are two families which constitute bulk of the narrow leaved weed species while as many as families contribute the dicot weeds.

Lagasca mollis, Celosia argentea, Tridax procumbens, Xanthium strttmarium andFlaveria australasici among broad leaved weeds andDigitaria sanguinalis, Pinicum spp., Dicanthium spp., Chloris bnrhata Cynodon dactylon andHtliropngan centorlus among narrow leaved weeds are extensively distributed and will catch the sight of an observer.
