Borreria liispida, Ageratum conyzoides, Digit aria sauguinalis, Sctaria glauca and Cynodon dactylon were the major weed species in upland rice in Nagaland. Butachlor 1.0 kg/ha with one hand weeding 30 d a s reduced the weed density and dry weight significantly ever butachlor 2.0 kg/ha and resulted in significantly higher grain yield. Two hand weedings was next best. Butachlor (2.0 kg/ha) reduced the yield of Naga-special and Jaya varieties and yields were ai par with weedy check. Naga-special yielded highest when weeds were controlled by two hand weedings.
