A field study carried out at Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow to study efficiency of herbicides in Sugarcane plant crop and also their effect on subsequent ratoon revealed that uncontrolled growth of weeds in sugarcane reduced cane yield by 40 per cent. Application of diuron and metribuzin in moist soil resulted in 12% higher weed controlefficiency than their application in dry soil. Use of herbicides increased sugarcane yield by 23 per cent over.weedy•check. Subsequent ratoon crop, also showed beneficial effects on account of weed control measures applied to plant crop and manual hoeing had superiority over chemical weeding.
