Influence of Nitrogen and Plant Densities on Competing Ability of Transplanted Paddy with Weeds

Abstract

Experiments were carried out during Kharif 1983 and 1984 to study the effect of nitrogen levels '(60.90 and 120 kg N/ha) and plant densities (25,33,42,50 and 66 hilkls/m2) on the growth of weeds in transplanted rice. Higher plant densities (66 hills/m2) significantly increased grain yield of rice over the recommended plant density (33 hills/m2) under all the nitrogen levels. On the average of two years, higher plant population (66 plants/m2) in combination with 120 kg N/ha accounted for 13.4 q/ha dry matter of the weeds as compared to 23.6 q/ha in the plant population of 33 plants/m2 at the same level of nitrogen.
