The intercropping of groundnut/blackgram/gresngram/cowpea with pigeonpea increased the pigeonpea equivalent yield over sole cropping of pigeonpea. The inclusion of intercrops viz. blackgram, greengram, groundnut and cowpea between the rows of pigeonpea resulted in 17.57, 16.09, 31.78 and 39.86 per cent weed suppre sion, respectively. Manual weeding twice was advantageous in improving the grain productivity under sole cropping of pigeonpea. However, in case of intercropping with blackgram and groundnut one hand weeding was found sufficient. Weeding once was also good with greengram and cowpea intercropping and two hand weedings had higher pigeonpea equivalent yield. Pre-emergence application of pendimethalin was effective and safe to all component crops.
