While terbutryn (2-methyl thio, 4 ethyl amino 6-tertiary butyl amino-s-triazine) increased chlorophyll content in maize seedlings both in pre-and post-emerggence application, it decreased the chlorophyll content in watergrass (Echinochloa colonum L.), the decrease being more pronounced at higher doses and with the increase in age of seedlings. The herbicide decreased starch but increased sugar content in maize both in pre-and post emergence application of terbutryn. In watergrass, though the starch content decreased both in pre-and post-emergence application of terbutryn, the final sugar content was much higher in post-emergence treated seedling than pre-treated ones at the corresponding concentrations of the herbicide.
