Weed-crop competition was studied in lentil during winter seasons from 1980-8] to J982-83. Chtnnpcdium album, Melilotus alba, M. indica and Fumariaparviflora were the weed species associated with the crop. C album was the most dominatirg weed. Competition with the weeds during first 30 days cT sowing resulted into average grain yitld loss of 17.7%. This loss was increased with the duration of competition resulting into more than 69% loss due to full season competition. Grain yield of lentil increased significantly with the inert as in initial duration of weed-free condition Lipto 60 days of sowing. However, further increase ?n weed-free period beyond 60 days caused significant yield increase during only one year. The density and dry weight of weed emerging 60 days after sowing were low and their growth was suppressed by the crop. The initial duration of 60 days was found to be critical for weed-crop competition.
