Results of field experiment conducted for two consecutive kharif seasons of 1988 and 1989 mdicated that on the average respective grain yields of 22.42 and 22.28 q/ha were obtained under pre-emergence application of butachlor 1.50 kg/ha and penditnethalin 1.0 kg/ha each followed by one hand weeding at 25-30 days after sowing, which were comparable with treatments of weed free (24.45 q/ha) and hand weeding twite (22.45 q/ha). These treatments had 84.4 and 93 6 per cent weed control efficiency.
