Chemical Weed Control in Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) under Rainfed and Irrigated Conditions

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted under rainfed hill conditions at Shillong (Meghalaya) during summer season of 1979 and 1980 and under irrigated conditions at Meerut, during autumn season of 1981–82 and 1982–83. All the weed control methods reduced the number and dry weight of weeds and gave higher yield than unweeded control at both the locations. Among the' herbicides metribuzin 0.7 kg/ha as pre-emergence was found most effective and gave maximum weed control efficiency followed by alachlor 1.5 kg/ha as pre-emergence and parquat 0.5 kg/ha as post emergence. Uncontrolled weeds reduced the tuber yield by 25.1 to 28.8 per cent at Shillong and by 12.6 to 18.6 per cent at Modipuram.
