Abstract

Effect of time of weed removal in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) and sesame (Sesomum indicum L.) intercropping was studied during kharif seasons of 1989 and 1990 at Research. Station, Barkachha, Mirzapur of Banaras Hindu University, Varansi. All the growth parameters, yield attributes and yield of pigeonpea and sesame increased when the plots were kept weed free between 30 and 45 d.a.s. and 15 and. 30 d.a.s. respectively. Keeping weed free conditions beyond 45 d.a.s. and 30 d.a.s. did not prove beneficial in case of pigeonpea and sesame respectively. Similarly, weed infestation before 30 d.a.s. had no significant adverse effect on pigeonpea crop. The results clearly establish that critical period of crop-weed competition in pigeonpea+seame intercropping system lies between 15 to 45 days aftcr sowing.
