Survey of weed flora of wheat fields conducted twice during 1980 to 1984 and 1985–1990 showed that wheat was found infested with 52 weed species, of which 6 were monocots and 46 dicots belonging to 16 families. The predominant weeds found in the crop were Phalaris minor Retz., Avena ludoviciana Our., Melilotus indica (L.) All., Chenopodium album L., Anagallis arvensis L. and Medicago denticulata L. The other weeds commonly associated with the crop were Poa annua L., Polypogon monspliensis (L.) Desf., Lolium temulentum L., Silene conoidea L., Rumex dentaturs L., Lathyrus aphaca L. and lepidium sativa L. In some parts of the state, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop and Convolvulus arvensis L. were also present.
Survey revealed that density of A. ludoviciana was on the increase in the districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Jalandtar, Kapurthala and Bhatinda. Population of P. minor was decreasing in the state except in Bhatinda but still it continued to be the most dominant weed of the crop throughout the sate. Infestation of M. denticulata, A. arvensis and S. conoidea was on the increase and that of C. album and M. Indica on the decrease in the crop.
