A field experiment conducted at Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, to find out the possibility of using herbicides in an intercropping system showed that fluchloralin and pendimethalin were as effective as the weed free treatment in reducing the density and growth of weeds and thereby improved the pigeonpea yield significantly. Fluazfopbutyl and haloxyfop-methyl were found to be slightly phytotoxic to the crops immeciiately after application which disappeared as the crop reached maturity. However, none of the herbicides had any phytoxic effect on the succeeding wheat.
