The tuber and shootwater extracts of Cyperus rotundus were assayed at O, 25, 50 and 100% levels for their effects on seed germination and early seedling growth of grain legumes. Water extracts of tuber and shoot of purple nutsedge reduced the seed germination of faba bean (Vicia sativa) and lentil (Lells esculenta) but did not affect in peas (Pisum sarivum) and chick pea (Cicer aeritillum). Reduction in coleoptile and radicle elongation of all grain legumes in study was ohserved except in pea where both extracts had stimulatory effect. In general, tuher extracts were more phytotoxic than the shoot extract.
