Two years field study conducted at the Research Farm of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana revealed that pre-emergence application of diuron at 1.6 kg/ha gave 81.3 per cent increase in cane yield over control (no weeding). Interaction between N levels and weed management treatments though was non-significant yet a saving of N and greater utilization of N even at the lower level of applied N(1 00 kg N/ha) through effective weed management with herbicide/manual weedings can be achieved. Diuron at 1.6 kg/ha gave a cane yield of 483 kg/kg N as against 268 kg/kg N for unweeded coptrol.
