Studies on Economic Viability of Weed Control with Herbicides in Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill]

Abstract

Field experiments were carried out on soybean in clay soils of Sagar (M. P.) during kharif 1990 and 1991. Results revealed that monacot, dicotand other minor weeds contributed 62, 31 and 7 percent of the total weed intensity, respectively. Echinochloa crusgalli, Beauv. (16.06%), Panicum maximum Jacq. (11.62%), Digitaria adscendens L Scap. (10.99%), Cyperusiria L (8.98%) and Celosia argentea L (7.50%)were the dominating weeds. All the herbicides applied in different doses resulted in lower weed dry matter production and weed population/m2 than weedy check. Herbicidal treatments viz., fluchloralin 1.0 kg/ha, metolachlor 2.25 and 3.0 kg/ha and clomazone 1.5 kg/ha were equally good to weed-free treatment (three hand weedings) for control in terms of weed intensity, weed biomass and seed yield. Use of the seherbicides proved to be more economically viable than three hand weedings with regard to cost-benefit ratio.
