Effect of Planting Geometry, Weed Management and Nitrogen Levels on Weeds and Yield in Transplanted Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Abstract

Field experiments were carried out on transplanted rice cv. Kranti during kharlf 1988 and 1989 at Jabalpur (M. P.) in which the square planting pattern (15 x 15 cm) significantly reduced the dry weight of weeds and had higher WCE than rectangular planting (22.5 x 10 cm) and also provided higher yields. Both, manual (hand weeding twice at 25 and 45 DAT) and chemical (application of butachIor 1.5 kg/ha at 7 DAT) + propanil 2 kg/ha at 30 DAT), weed control practices were equally effective with regard to WCE and yields and proved significantly superior over unweeded check. The weed biomass and crop yield increased with increase in the rate of nitrogen application upto 120 kg N/ha, but WCE was not affected due to varying nitrogen rates.
