Field experiments for the control of Rumex spinosus from wheat with sulfonyl urea herbicides were conducted at the experimental area of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 1994–95 and 1995–96. Application of metsulfuron and tribenzuron methyl each at 10 g/ha, 35 days after sowing provided good control of R. spinosus and other broad leaf weeds and significantly improved grain yield of wheat over two hand weedings or application of 2, 4–0 at 35 days after sowing. On an average of two years, application of metsulfuron and tribenzuron methyl at 10 g/ha each, increased grain yield by 29.9 and 81.1% over 2,4–0 and unweeded (control) treatment, respectively. Chlorimuron ethyl at 10 g/ha proved phytotoxic to crop.
