A tield experiment conducted during kharif seasons of 1989–90 and 1991–92 at IGKYY Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Ambikapur (M. P.) revealed that paired row planting of arhar+three rows of soybean gave significantly higher arhar equivalent yield and harvest index as compared with sole crops of arhar and soybean. Soybean as an intercrop reduced the arhar yield. The lowest yield of arhar was recorded with arhar paired rows at 30 cm and three rows of soybean. whereas the highest yield was obtained with arhar paired rows at 30 cm. Two hand wcedings at 20 and 40 DAS gave significantly higher arhar equivalent yield and harvest index than the application of tluchloralin 1.5 kg per ha as pre-sowing soil incorporation. Planting patterns of arhar + soybean recorded significantly higher harVest index and less weed biomass/sq. m than the sole arhar and soybean plantings.
