Field experiments were conducted during winter seasons of 1992–93 to 1994–95 at experimental farm, Hawalpagh of V. P. K. A. S. (ICAR), Almora to find out the most effective control measure for weeds in wheat under irrigated condition, with special reference to Ranunculus arvensis. The data revealed that isoproturon plus isoproturon+2, 4-D at 1.00 kg/ha applied 35 DAS proved most effective in reducing total weed dry weight and there was near complete control of Ranunculus weed under this treatment. The yield and yield attributes under this treatment were at par with that of post-emergence application of isoproturon 1.00 kg/ha, isoproturon plus at 0.75 kg/ha, tank mixed combination of i:;oprotufon + 2, 4-D at 0.8+0.2 or 1.00+0.5 kg/ha, respectively and pre-emergence pendilnelbalin 1.0 kg/ha. Higher doses of herbicides provided better control of weeds, including R. arvensis, which in turn produced more effective tillers, grains/ear and yield than lower dose. 2,4-D could provide partial control of Ranunculus weed and was ineffective against grassy weeds. Pre-emergence application of isoproturon was inferior to its post-emergence application in controlling Ranunculus and total weeds. One hand weeding proved insufficient for controlling this weed and hence gave less grain yield compared to isoproturon.
