A field experiment was conducted during kharif seasons of 1995 and 1996 to study the relative efficacy of herbicides alone and in combination with hand weeding at 45 days after treatment (DAT). Season-long crop-weed competition reduced the dry fruit yield by 91.9%. All the weed control treatments significantly reduced the weed population and their dry weight in turn increased the yield significantly except fluchloralin alone at 1.0 kg/ha in 1995 and pendimethalin and fluchloralin alone at 1.0 kg/ha each during 1996 compared to weedy check in both the years. Pre-emergence application of alachlor at 2.0 or 3.0 kg/ha+HW at 45 DAT produced maximum dry fruit yield (41.3 q/ha) and it was on par with weed free (59.5 q/ha).
