Investigations on soil, water and weed management for lowland rice were carried out for two years (1995 and 1996) both in kharif and rabi on sandy clay loam soils at Tirupati campus of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University. Four soils (intensive, normal puddling, ordinary ploughing and soil compaction) and three water management (deep, shallow and phasic submergence) practices were tested on rabi rice in the first experiment. Three promising treatment combinations viz., intensive puddling and shallow submergence, intensive puddling and phasic submergence and normal puddling and phasic submergenee were tested on subsequent kharif rice with three weed management practices (weedy check, hand weeding and herbicide application) in the second experiment. Irrespective of water management practices, puddling was effective in reducing both weed density and dry weight all through the crop period. The results revealed that intensive puddling and shallow depth of submergence were effective to suppress the weed growth.
