A study was undertaken for three years (1969–70 to 1971–72) at the Central Research Farm of the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar to evaluate the comparative efficiency of herbicides and cultural methods in overall control of the weeds under four different cropping patterns with three crops per year in irrigated upland.
The data revealed that the overall weed incidence was the least with the pattern ‘Maize-cauliflower-groundnut.’ The pattern ‘Jute-maize-ladies finger’ was next and at par with it. Amongst the methods of weeds control, use of herbicides was found to be signi-ficantly superior over the cultural methods. With regard to the total production per year and the comparative economics ‘maize-cauliflower-groundnut’ was found to be the best and was significantly superior over the rest of the patterns tried. With respect to the methods of weed control, herbicidal method recorded higher net profit over traditional cultural methods.
