A field experiment was conducted in kharif seasons of 1972 and 1973 at the Tirupati campus of the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University on sandy loam soil of low fertility on the control of weeds in rainfed bunch variety (TMV 2) of groundnut. There were seven treatments besides a no weeding treatment. The treatments were: hand-weeding twice (15th and 30th day after sowing), 2, 4-D EE at 0.5 and 1.0 kg/ha, alachlor at 1.0 and 2.0 kg/ha, 2, 4-D EE at 0.5 kg/ha + one hand weeding at 30 days and alachlor at 1.00 kg/ha + one hand weeding at 30 days. All the herbicides were applied as pre-emergence sprays. A quantity of 500 1/ha of spray solution was applied with high volume sprayer. The results indicated that pre-emergence application of alachlor at 2.00 kg/ha or alachlor 1.00 kg/ha + one hand weeding at 30 days after sowing effectively controlled the weeds and gave higher net return.
