Weeds in farm fields are an important factor limiting crop production in India. Improved tillage practices after harvest and before planting would greatly reduce the weed problem in the cropping season.
To assist the farmer in combatting weeds and to enable him to plant early under improved seed-bed conditions with his bullock power, country plough*, blade harrow and seeding methods, a year-round minimum tillage plan was developed.
The programme consists of surface tillage with the country plough and/or the wide blade harrow beginning immediately after harvest and as soil moisture permits following summer and pre-monsoon showers.
